Book Review: Happy

I found the book Happy the preschool music kit that I recently ordered from my local library, and it gets a double thumbs up from my family!  The words are simply the lyrics to the popular song Happy by Pharrell Williams, so that caught the ear of my kids right away!  They love that song, and they all wanted to sing along as we read sang the book!  The fact that it encourages kids to sing using a song that they know and love is a complete win in my book!

Amazing Pictures

Another great thing about this book are the pictures!  The cover page instantly grabs your attention with fun polka dots and neon lettering!  The kids in the book are involved in fun costumes and scenarios that look like children’s crafts.  What child wouldn’t love pictures of kids in cool cardboard boats, playing in a cardboard band, and flying in a cardboard airplane.  This encourages kids to really use their imagination!

Looks Like Me!

Finally, there is one thing that I love most about this book. All of the children photographed for the illustrations in the book are multicultural!  There are children with different shades of hair, skin, and eyes. There are boys and girls, and there are several ethnicities represented.  This makes the book especially accessible because everyone loves to see a child in a book who looks like them!  Plus, it shows the kids all playing together.  I think that this is an important message to children that everyone is valuable and friendship isn’t only reserved for those who look just like you!

 

This book is a positive message from cover to cover, and it would be a wonderful musical addition to every child’s library!
